This Season

7th in the League

The 2013–14 season was Manchester United's 22nd season in the Premier League, and their 39th consecutive season in the top-flight of English football. This was David Moyes' only season as manager after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired after 26 years in charge. Moyes was sacked on 22 April 2014 after presiding over a poor season in which the club failed to defend their Premier League title and failed to qualify for Europe for the first time since 1989–90. United competed in the two domestic cups – the FA Cup and the League Cup – where they entered both tournaments in the third round courtesy of their league position the previous season. They reached the semi-finals of the League Cup before going out to Sunderland on penalties, but fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup, losing to Swansea City in the Third Round. In the last of their 24 successive seasons of European football, United were eliminated from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, beaten 4–2 on aggregate by Bayern Munich.
